Makeup Tutorial: Neon Yellow Liner | Purple Lips

Hi Beauties!

I recently decided to play with some color when going out for the night, and use some makeup that I do not use on a daily basis. I am in love with neutral looks with pops of color because it is playful and bold– my favorite!

Steps and Products:

Start by applying moisturizer and SPF— gotta protect that skin!
Then, apply your favorite foundation and make sure you buff it in really well, which will give your skin a flawless appearance. I use Tarte’s Amazonian Clay foundation in Tan Honey, which is amazing.
To set the foundation and make it last even longer, apply some setting powder. If you need extra coverage, which I like, apply a powder foundation. I always use my MAC Studio Fix powder in NC40.
Next, we are going to move on to the eyes– AKA the windows to your soul. For the base, I used MAC’s Paint Pot in Frozen Violet, which is part of their Divine Night collection. However, I do believe it is also in their permanent collection since you can buy it separately. Since we are using a cream base for the eyelids it is not necessary to prime your lids. But, if you really want to, go ‘head girl!
Once you have applied your base, take a fluffy brush and work a soft brown color into your crease, and a little bit above, to blend out the harsh edges. I used Soft Brown by MAC— shocking, I know!
I then took a smaller, tapered fluffy brush, picked up the same Soft Brown color and applied a more concentrated amount directly into the crease to make the color more intense and smokey.
Once you have reached the desired intensity with your eyeshadow, take a neon yellow liquid liner. I used Lime Crime’s in Citreuse. Keep in mind this eyeliner is very streaky and you really need to work with it. I messed up so many times before I got it just right. Apply one layer then let it dry and apply a second layer. Continue this step until you reach your preferred opacity. Remember to wing out your liner and make it pretty thick.
After you have applied the neon yellow liner choose your favorite black liquid eyeliner and create a smaller, thinner wing. I used Stila’s Stay-all-day felt tip liner, which makes it easier to apply.
Pop some white liner on to your water line to make your eyes appear bigger. The one I chose is NYX’s Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk because it is inexpensive and creamy so it glides on easily. You want to purchase good quality eye liners that apply easily without pulling on your skin, which will cause wrinkles when you are older.
After, apply your favorite concealer or highlighter under your eyes. Tip: if you want to brighten up under your eyes, do not use a color that matches your skin tone. Instead, apply a concealer or highlighter that is two shades lighter than your actual skin tone. I used MAC’s Highlighting Pen in Bright Forecast to brighten up and conceal under my eyes. If you have really dark under eyes, you should apply a concealer first and then highlight.
To set the highlighter under my eyes I then used Ben Nye’s Translucent Powder in Fair (Ben Nye is a little difficult to find, but check out a local theater store, and they will probably have it). This will keep your concealer/highlighter in place and stop it from creasing.
Curl your lashes and apply your favorite mascara. I used three different mascaras to create more volume and thickness. First, I applied Benefit’s They’re Real. Second, Too Faced Size Queen. Third, Clinique’s Lash Doubling.
We’re done with the eyes! Now, the cheeks. Begin by bronzing and contouring your cheeks with your favorite bronzer. I used NARS Laguna and applied it with a big fluffy brush. Then I took a smaller, tapered brush and concentrated that same bronzer into the hollow of my cheeks to create a more structured look.
For blush, I used Peaches by MAC and softly tapped that on to my cheeks, blending it into the bronzer a bit. You do not want a distinct separation between your blush and bronzer!
Finally, take a highlighter– I used Soft and Gentle, also by MAC— and apply that down the bridge of your nose, on your cupids bow, the tops of your cheeks, on the inner corner of your eyes, and on your brow bone. This will brighten up the look and give your skin a natural glow.
For the lips, I wanted to add another pop of color and applied an OCC Lip Tar in Hoochie, which is an ultra-violet color. You can definitely use a nude color if you are more comfortable with that.
Lastly, take setting spray like MAC’s Fix+ and lock your makeup into place by misting it all over. Now, it will last all night!
